Hani Abd El-Mourid

Hani Abd El-Mourid, acclaimed fiction author and literary figure

Hani Abd El-Mourid is a prominent Egyptian novelist and short story writer, recognized as one of the distinctive literary voices in contemporary Arab culture. His works fuse realism and fantasy, diving into the depths of the human psyche while addressing philosophical and social themes. Born in Egypt, Hani received an education in various fields that enriched his intellectual and literary vision. He holds a Ph.D. in Literature, reflecting his deep interest in critical and academic studies. He currently works as a critic and writer for several newspapers and websites, and he actively participates in literary seminars and conferences.

Before establishing his literary career, Hani began his professional life in journalism, working for various Egyptian journalistic institutions. In one of his interviews, he mentioned that this journalistic experience equipped him with the ability to capture precise details and ‘write in the language of reality without embellishment.’ However, his journey into literature was not without challenges, as he faced difficult periods before finding his path to publication.

Eventually, Hani Abd El-Mourid became a prolific writer, producing a range of works that include novels, short stories, and critical studies. He believes, as he stated in an interview with ‘Al-Arab’ in London, that ‘every true short story writer can write a good novel, but the opposite is not always true.’ This conviction has led him to explore the stories of marginalized and forgotten individuals.

His literary style combines poetic elements with stark realism, focusing particularly on marginalized social classes. He highlights issues of corruption, social oppression, and the human struggle with identity and environment, which has positioned him as one of the significant representatives of the 1990s generation in contemporary Egyptian literature. Hani’s linguistic style is both sweet and poetic, merging classical Arabic with colloquialism, which brings his texts to life and makes them relatable to readers. He employs advanced narrative techniques, such as ‘the novel within the novel’ and polyphony, enriching his works with multiple interpretive layers and paying close attention to the complexities of the human psyche.

Hani Abd El-Mourid believes that the novel can break taboos and address the unspoken, expressing a ‘wounded conscience’ in a challenging time. His writings invite readers to engage with philosophical depth and a sincere, objective exploration of human reality, often leaning towards magical realism and the use of symbols and myths.
